III Black
After dinner we again headed for the Chapleau Game Preserve. I turned on the side road where our first bear was placed in the morning. I did not expect to look, knowing that they are not traveling around. No bear was seen.
We returned to the main road. Slowdown at each lake, we scanned the coastline for any movement and water for any signs of wildlife. We again stopped at the "Beaver House" sign to strain our eyes to see any movement. We are not sure if we even as "house." The next stop was the Moose Lookout. Nope! Just a mile or two platform 3 characters appeared. We fought off the mosquitoes and bugs more to see any wildlife. I remember not to mention bugs. There are many bugs, mosquitoes, black flies and other varmints flying around you when you leave the protection of your vehicle. One stop we did this afternoon was the repulsive!
I was told by my wife that we should turn around in 15 minutes. It was now 8:30 and we did not want to be out in the wilderness after nightfall. I saw a black shape on the side of the road. Not want to come out of the car, I tried to focus the camera. She ambled off with her three kids ran after her, without waiting for her photo to be taken. The total, including yesterday reached seven bears. Approaching a road that we drove past this morning, I turned in hoping to see something different. There was a lovely lake, but this time we would not get out of the car only to return and kill insects that went into the car with us. We started back. My wife saw the mother bear first. I stopped a kilometer away and was able to snap several pictures through the windshield. A cub showed up and went against mother who was crossing the road when another came running. They have all disappeared into the forest, which proved to be a bank lowering to a depth of 15 or 20 feet. My wife discovered those in the bottom of the waiver. I backed up, to catch a glimpse of them as they ran further into the woods. After all we saw was a pair of rabbits are sitting on the road. Each rabbit was alone and quickly left, seeking shelter in the woods as we approached.
The rest of the drive was uneventful. A waitress told us she had seen several moose on a drive back from Timmins, a city we would travel through to reach Cochrane, our next destination. The decision to leave the next day for Timmins or Cochrane previously done, do not want to spend a second day running 50-80 miles without seeing a lot of wildlife. In this way we may be able to go to the Polar Bear Rehabilitation Habitat on Friday.
Gas
One of the things I forgot to mention earlier. When we saw our first gas station in Canada was $ 1,099 and we are facing! What is the U.S. doing to us! Later we learned that the price of a liter to 3.75 liters to a gallon. Today at $ 1.21 a liter we filled up for $ 67. Converting from liters to the gallon calculated to 14 gallons. I failed to tell you that this little Esso gas station in Chapleau have full service. Later, in a second "station" I was asked though I would have checked my oil! A man who actually filled our tank for us! Some of you out there remember this service until the early 1970s, a service that is been forgotten in the States and other parts of Canada.
Suggestions:
If you decide to venture into this part of the world, making it another time of years. It would be more comfortable without all the insects. I have been told that the worst of times for black flies is late May and June. In July and August are hot, which might not be good either. Snowmobiles would provide entertainment, but the noise will keep wild animals away. A quiet ride in the evening or early morning may prove best for viewing wildlife.
