If I buy a DVR or a Tivo DVR box can I use it even though I dont have a subcription with TiVo?

What has been good quality DVR's, is it easy to transfer video files to a computer? Will it work for cable and satellite, or even regular TV. How does it work? Okay a Tivo unit will not work all without a subscription. A DirecTV Tivo will not record anything without a subscription, but it will still play shows you have recorded on it. When you hack the unit / s (MUST be a Series 1 or Series 2 DirecTV Tivo or Series 1 and Series 2 Tivo) you can use some programs so you can download the shows / movies from the decrypted stored on your D Tivo on a PC for veiwing / Burning onto a DVD.
