DVR Tivo

If I buy a DVR or a Tivo DVR box can I use it even though I dont have a subcription with TiVo?

If I buy a DVR or a Tivo DVR box can I use it even though I dont have a subcription with TiVo? If so I would probably not be able to store more shows and things like that right? What has been good quality DVR's, is it easy to transfer video files to a computer? Will it work for cable and satellite, or even regular TV. How does it work? In that case I would probably not be able to save more shows and things like that right? What has been good quality DVR's, it's easy to transfer video files to a computer?

Okay a Tivo unit will not work all without a subscription. A DirecTV Tivo will not record anything without a subscription, but it will still play shows you have recorded on it. Check this link on this precise. Http: / / www.dvrplayground.com/article/10171/Living-with-two-Series-2-TiVo-s/ http://www.dvrplayground.com/comments/10172/ Discussion --- Living-with-two-Series-2-TiVo-P / I is just to clarify things for you. Now there's DVR is that you can do that can work with all types of television (only issue is with DirecTV, since all their channels digitally encrypted and you need a DVR from DirecTV in most cases. There are ways a Tivo can be used with a regualr DirecTV receiver, but it cuts a lot of dual tuner functionality and to watch and record two shows at the same time). Now you can build your own DVR to work In almost all cases. Check out these links. Http: / / www.dvrplayground.com/category/9/Homebrew-and-DIY http://www.dvrplayground.com/article/13531/Free-TiVo--Build-a-Better-DVR Out-of-an-Old-PC / http://www.dvrplayground.com/article/12576/Hack-Attack--Build-your-own-DVR/ The I mention these is that they also have a TV Guide, which can be downloaded over Internet. Or you can go with a DVR whatever cable company you use. Now if you go with a DirecTV Tivo (not a DIRECTV DVR), so it can be upgraded and modified to to do a lot of cool things like transferring your TiVo's shows / movies to a PC through your home wired / wireless network quite easily. If this sounds interesting so read on. I have compiled a list of links and knowledge through what I have done and what I did to upgrade to LARGE disks (MORE recording time) and network capabilities. First check out site # 1 it has forums that explain how to hack your DirecTV Tivo and Tivo brand Tivo so that you have Networking abilities on your D Tivo which allow MRV (multiroom Viewing if you have more than one D Tivo), HMO (Home Media option) which allows you to have a PC connected to your home network that can be used as a server for your MP3 files and images to be displayed on your D Tivo. When you hack the unit / s (MUST be a Series 1 or Series 2 DirecTV Tivo or Series 1 and Series 2 Tivo) you can use some programs so you can download the shows / movies from the decrypted stored on your D Tivo on a PC for veiwing / Burning onto a DVD. If you have additional questions, I can give you many more information if you email me. I have used these site below to aid me in Hacking 5 DirecTV Tivo (Qty2-SD-DVR40, HDVR2, Qty2-DSR704). I have HMO, MRV, can get accessed via the Internet with gotomydvr.com can download shows / movies from all units. Site # 2 when you purchase the software necessary to upgrade the D Tivo, look for either their set, or if you want to upgrade yourself look at InstantCake 3.1 or 6.2, PTVnet, Slicer. (InstantCake is the operating system / software shows you see on screen PTVnet is the software to boot the ISO disk you download to your PC when you connect a new hard drive, and it enables the USB ports and allows networking, The Slicer lets you get / receive upgrade from DirecTV without losing all your previous hacks for software upgrades.) # 3 is a forum to get the other required software patches to allow you to decrypt the DirecTV signal before it is saved on the D Tivo's hard drive. And a patch to allow downloads of shows / movies from the D Tivo. (Super Patch-67all-nutkase, and super-patch-62a, Tytool 10R4, and others) # 4 a forum on HOW TO and questions and answers # 5 a GREAT display of instruction with pictures on how to remove the hard drive form Tivo unit and install all the hacks) # 1 http://www.dvrplayground.com (Forum and instructions on how to hack units) # 2 http://www.dvrupgrade.com (site to purchase DirecTV linux software to upgrade to a large hard drive plus USB ports for networking) # 3 # 4 http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/ http://www.tivocommunity.com # 5 http://www.weethet.nl/english/tivo_dtv2_os6hack.php (Version 6.2) # 6 http://www.weethet.nl/english/tivo_dtv2_os4hackrid.php (for Software Version other than 6.2) Hope this helps and have fun.
