Who are the engineers who determines when things when things need to break down?
Carry bicycles, call them what you want. Pears can potentially last hundred years, which has proved virtually everything that takes energy to produce, who are the guys who design things to fail just after the warranty expires? I congratulate them on a job well done.
It is actually the consumer or customer who drive these patterns. If he did not write it down directly or indirectly in a specification (as is often the case of large prejects) he promotes through its market conduct. Basically, it is Darwinian, not the buyer will prefer to buy the big, heavy, poorly performing and cost item that will last forever forward to cheaper, smaller, lighter one has (in one way or another), higher performance, so provider of the latter will soon dominate the market until competitors obviously see the trend and come up with something even cheaper, smaller, lighter and with even better results. This very common presses lifetime of the product. Manufacturers and their engineers have no choice but to react to the market or go the way of the dinosaurs. Do not have any illusions - The environmentally friendly design that is sold is either because people are somehow motivated to pay extra (ie, market demand for them - they may actually be smaller, lighter, etc.) or institution is willing to subidise them or punish / legislate against the alternatives - again to make them salable. Look at the caution by manufacturers to introduce new materials or products - it took almost 40 years after the engineers had to get carbon fiber established and accepted in the market.
