How to calibrate a 5.1 surround sound home theater?
I wonder what the best way to calibrate a 5.1 surround sound system. I just bought the theater in a box 5.1 system. Have you set the levels of the various speakers to a certain volume? What am I listening to? Are there any DVD movies that are available having a channel or a good test to test / enjoy an excellent surround sound mix and design? thanks!
I recommend that you go buy one of those Home Theater Calibration DVDs. I have 'Home Theater Essentials ", but there are 2 or 3 other titles that are quite similar. These DVDs include calibration tests for both your video and audio settings, and explanation of what all those settings on the TV actually means. Most TV is not calibrated correctly. The plant usually cranks the contrast and saturation way up, so you get an overly bright picture that can look good in the terrible illumination of your local Best Buy, but it does not work for most home settings - And worse - can actually harm your TV over a long period of time. audio part, the DVD contains various tests to verify that you have connected the speakers and be positioned correctly. One test, for example, involves no walking around on a hard floor with tap shoes while talking. If everything is set correctly, you should be able to hear him go "all around you." When he says "I'm behind you", should sound literally comes from your back 2 speakers, but when he says "I is behind and to the right "only your rear right speaker should be used. If you want to get really picky about speaker placement and volume settings you can get a sound meter from Radio Shack or other electronics store. Meter about where your head will be in the room while watching TV (eg on the headrest of the sofa), and use it to help adjust your speakers, one at a time so that they each produce the same level of sound, and that when measured at the same time. Some higher-end receivers allows you to adjust the individual volume and delay settings. Otherwise you'll just have to move the speaker around. Film with action scenes offer explosions are a great way to show your surround system. Pop in "Saving Private Ryan ', turning up the volume and you should literally hear the bullets whizzing by your ears as the explosions from enemy mortars rattle your teeth. You swear there should be bullet holes in the walls after it!
