Lan Nas

Help with NAS ... plz?
Hi everyone! I'm gonna buy was just a USB external hard drive, but I came across NAS (Network Attached Storage). I have a little bit of research on it and I know you can share files and stuff over a LAN. So let's say I have this home network and a wireless router, and I can connect the NAS to it and have my files shared with all the computer independent. BUT, can I somehow make my files are accessible (those in the NAS connected home network) to work or school or library? I would appreciate any comments, suggestions and answers Thanks for the help I forgot to mention, I want the NAS to function as a virtual hard drive (anywhere, anytime) Do I have to sign up for a service? ok how would I put NAS up, so I can access it from a remote location. Please give as much information as you can, because when I buy it, I can not return anything. Thank you
Well, here are a few things to consider: 1) NAS will operate at the speed of your network. This is probably about 100Mbps 2) It does not require a computer to function and usually include utilities such as FTP access, Windows file sharing, web management, etc. 3) A USB drive will work much faster than the network. 4) A USB drive will require the host computer to be on in order to have access to 5) Host computer must share the USB drive 6) None (well, not really) the web admin for USB drives. FTP access will be supplied by the host computer. So with the above, you need to decide if the speed is a problem. I have both USB drives and NAS connectivity. It takes approximately 2 hours to perform a backup to the NAS device whereas the USB drive get it done in about 20 minutes. (Both have the same drive in them.) With NAS, yes you can open it up so it is available through your firewall and accessible from the Internet without having a computer turned on. You can also do this using the USB drive, but again, there must be a computer at home to host the USB drive. If you must go to Accessability from outside your network, I will go with NAS. Otherwise I will give the speed and go with USB. *** Added info *** To get access to it from outside your network, you'd need to modify your router and firewall settings to create what is known as a DMZ. Basically, you will allow the IP address of the device to be reached from the Internet. How you do this depends on the equipment you have, because they are all different.
